Check your contact CSV before importing

Find duplicate email addresses, missing names and uneven rows in a contact CSV. Check the file in your browser without uploading it.

Updated October 10, 2026 · ppl team

A quick check can save a long afternoon of cleaning up an address book. Choose a contact CSV, tell the checker which columns contain names and email addresses, and review the records that may need attention.

The file stays in your browser. This page does not upload it, save a copy or send its contents to analytics. Use Clear to remove it from the page, or close the tab when you are finished.

UTF-8, comma-separated CSV. Up to 10 MiB, 5,000 contact records and 100 columns. Keep your original file as a backup.

Choose the columns to check

Common headings are selected for you. Choose each field once and skip anything you do not plan to import. These choices only affect this check; you will review the mapping again in ppl. If an export has several email columns, choose the one you want as the primary address. The checker only compares the email column you select.

What the check tells you

The checker finds repeated email addresses within this file, records without a mapped first or last name, uneven rows and email values worth reviewing. It also flags birthdays that are not valid calendar dates written as YYYY-MM-DD and cells that may be interpreted as spreadsheet formulas. It does not run those formulas.

A repeated email address does not always mean a duplicate person. Families may share an address. Two records for one person may have different addresses. Decide what to keep before importing; the checker does not merge or change records.

What happens when you import into ppl

In ppl, open Settings and choose Import contacts. Upload the CSV, review the column mapping and preview, then confirm the import. The current importer accepts first name, last name, email, phone, birthday, organization and notes. It skips records without a name and checks email addresses against contacts already in your account.

This check cannot see your existing ppl contacts, test whether an email address receives mail or guarantee every date will import correctly. It does not check account limits. Use the import preview and review the result afterward. If your file is too large, split it into smaller files before uploading; the current preview stores the first 5,000 rows.

Export a comma-separated UTF-8 CSV rather than an Excel workbook or a semicolon-separated file. If your address book only offers vCard, use the appropriate vCard import in ppl instead. Read the contact import guide for the full process.

When the names are in place, make a small plan with the weekly follow-up worksheet.
